MIFUNE did it again!
The MIFUNE team is happy again (by the way: as always!) to featuring our newest maki roll creation: The Philadelphia Maki Roll.
And also to be honest with our guests – as always – we have to tell you that we got inspired of an American businessman from Dumaguete. He told our web admin, that he is really missing a decent Philadelphia maki roll in the Philippines… Probably he is around from Pennsylvania or New York. Why our guess is Pennsylvania? Philadelphia is the Pennsylvania’s largest city and if you google ”Philadelphia Sushi”: there pops up plenty of Sushi restaurants from Philadelphia. ”What – a maki roll creation from Philadelphia?” you might ask yourself.
Not really. Even the world popular California maki roll was ”founded”… in Vancouver!!! We caught you! Different sources say it was in 1971. However, the California maki – and you are of course right, becomes very popular in Los Angeles and was soon known as the California roll.
What’s now about the Philadelphia makis? The name “Philly roll” or “Philadelphia maki roll” derives from the Philadelphia Cream Cheese brand. Incorporating Salmon and cream cheese in a sushi roll took this popular combination of different “nonjapanese” ingredients from its use when sushi increased in popularity in Northern America starting in the 1980s.
Maybe also a Scandinavian chef was involved in the invention: The northern Europeans are known for their famous smørrebrød (from Danish “sandwich”). You’ll find in many smørrebrød a combination of fish and cheese and fruits!
The Philadelphia roll now got its name due to the cheese by the same name, one of the main ingredients besides the (smoked) Salmon. And avocado should not be missing!! Sure, MIFUNE’s serves you the “Philly roll” with avocado. Please don’t forget: fresh avocado is only seasonally available in Dumaguete, that means not all year long! Don’t worry, we serve also a variation with fresh mango. Please tell our waitresses your choice: avocado or mango.
YES, we use only Philadelphia Cream Cheese – and as for now: no more secrets reviled of the other ingredients of our MIFUNE Philadelphia Roll!
Let’s have a try. With avocado or mango filling served in our sushi boats — 8 pcs for PHP 240.00.
