Why call so many Christians the day of Jesus’ death a “Good Friday” instead of “Black Friday” or something similar? Some European Christian traditions do take this approach: in Switzerland, Austria and Germany, for example, the day is called Karfreitag, or “Sorrowful Friday.” In English, starts in fact, the origin of the term “Good” is debated: many believe it developed from an older name: “God’s Friday.”
